musical director

Fenella completed a Bachelor of Music Performance at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2011 and has over 20 years experience as a professional musician. This includes many years in community brass bands throughout Melbourne. She has also participated in many state brass band competitions, as either a soloist, small ensemble performer or within a brass band.

With a wide variety of experiences outside brass bands, Fenella particularly remembers the time she performed as part of a marching funk band in a television talent quest and as a member of the highest rated Secondary School orchestra in the state. Fenella also toured the USA and South Korea as the trombone section leader of a big band. This has all lead to the development of her skills in a broad and expansive repertoire of music covering just about every genre possible. Fenella is highly regarded as an extremely flexible and knowledgeable musician.

During her own personal musical journey, Fenella has had a collection of amazing mentors and now feels that it is her turn to give back to the community that helped her develop her own talents. She believes that a community band not only gives joy and pleasure to the listeners but gives the players a powerful connection with their fellow musicians and with their audience. This is something that is hard to achieve through other mediums. Fenella aims to showcase the talents of each band member by supporting and encouraging every player to commit to continuously improving their technique and musicality.

Fenella believes that music has always been a way to unite people within a community despite their different demographics, cultures and past musical experiences. She plans to use her time as Musical Director to develop a vibrant, thriving and inclusive musical culture around the Band.
